Background
Lucid Athlete is a fitness app for performance-oriented endurance athletes.
Lucid sets itself apart from other fitness apps by providing users with meaningful, insightful and unique fitness metrics (using Apple Health’s data) that truly represent an individuals fitness, and can help them make smart decisions that maximize their progress and reduce injury and setbacks, especially when short on time.
Why it’s different…
The app is currently in its early stages of beta testing, and is looking to expand its features and further explore the needs of their primary user groups.
Where it’s headed…
Research
To get a better understanding of the current endurance athlete experience, we created a User Journey Map and completed a competitive analysis. Both methods gave us further insight into the current experience of an endurance athlete given the products currently in the market.
-
Fitness apps are an essential part of the endurance athlete experience. Athletes rely on products to plan workouts and set goals, view live metrics that inform their training, view and track progress and share their accomplishments.
-
The Competitive Analysis discovered that other fitness products provide many of the same funtions for users:
-View health and sleep metrics
-Plan workouts & set goals
-Record workouts and view progress
-View live metrics during workouts
-Share accomplishments
Sketching Feature Cards
As a group, we used rapid prototyping to quickly represent about 100 feature ideas for expanding the Lucid Athlete app.
Tech Scoping
After rapid prototyping was complete, we met with the Lucid Athlete developer to discuss cost and feasibility of our ideas.
Each prototype was assigned a point value (using the fibonacci scale) and a budget of 30 points for the project was decided.
Virtual 2 hr. scoping meeting with developer
Prioritizing Features
With an abundance of feature ideas, now came the challenge of deciding which features to move forward with. Which features were most important to primary users? Which features were feasible given the 30 point budget for this sprint? I narrowed in by focusing back on our research and client & user goals.
Feature Recommendations
The recommended features were chosen because they align at the intersection of the user and client goals. Through user journey mapping and Kano Analysis, users stated that being able to view live metrics during the workouts, and record their workouts to compare/track their progress over time, were the main reasons they use fitness apps and wearables. They are also key functions of a Garmin, which was one of the four focus areas noted by the client.

Takeaways
While there are many products that offer similar features, Lucid Athlete has detected a gap in the market where there is a lack of affordable options that offer true, meaningful insights to users that can truly help them maximize training and prevent injury.
While Lucid Athlete should continue developing the features that make them unique (including the body Score and Lucid Aerobic Score insights), it’s also important to consider what features users consider standard, required features for a fitness app.
Endurance Athletes rely heavily on fitness apps and technology to maximize their fitness and recovery. There are a lot of fitness apps that currently exist that offer many of the same features and functions.
Next Steps
If given the opportunity to continue working with Lucid Athlete, I would like to do more research around the unique metrics that Lucid provides users, such as the body score and the Lucid Aerobic Score. Research revealed that although users want and expect these types of metrics from a fitness app, they aren’t always understood or trusted, and therefor not used much by athletes in their decision making around training. Id like to explore what form these features could take, and what language could be used to most clearly communicate these meaningful insights to users, so they can have a positive impact on their fitness journey.
